Denia
This attractive town with its imposing castle is still a working fishing port. It boasts miles of clean wide sandy beaches as well as a large marina and sailing club. You'll find a very good selection of restaurants and bars offering international as well as typically Spanish menus. Try Bar Sendra at Las Rotas (at the southern end of Denia). This delightful family run restaurant serves excellent fresh fish and paella. It's positioned right on the sea with spectacular views towards Ibiza from both its terrace and dining room. A short drive further on will be bring you to town of Javea. Denia can be reached in around 1.5 hours by car (via the A7) or two hours by bus. No direct rail link as the line currently terminates in Gandia. See also Beaches.
La Albufera
Closer to home and just a little further on from the beach at El Saler is the beautiful lagoon known as La Albufera. This area is now a protected natural park and is in fact one of the largest bodies of freshwater in the whole of Spain. Regarded as ecologically important, it is home to around 250 different species of bird. Why not take a boat trip around the lake and then finish with Paella Valenciana in one of the many restaurants in the nearby village of El Palmar. La Albufera is approximately 25 minutes from the city by car. It is possible to get there by bus, although the service is infrequent.
