Paella is normally only served lunchtimes and Valencians particularly enjoy it as their main meal on Sunday afternoon.
Many head for the popular restaurants at Las Arenas (by the beach at La Malvarosa) El Palmar (by the Albufera) or the
beach at El Saler. Booking (especially on a Sunday) is recommended.
If you prefer to eat at home then it's possible to order a Paella para llevar (to take away). A small deposit allows
you to take it home still in the pan! Other rice dishes typical of the region are Arroz Negro (cooked in squids ink)
and Arroz al horno (baked in the oven).
In the summer why not try a glass of delicious horchata. This local speciality is made from chufas (tiger nuts) and is
usually served with fartons, a light finger shaped bun designed for dunking!
Traditional Valencian restaurants tend to offer up pretty much the same menu wherever you go. Unless the chef has a
particular speciality or signature dish, don't expect too many suprises. That said, the food is usually of a high
standard and (so long as you're not vegetarian!) you'll find plenty to choose from.
