Las Fallas - 15th to 19th of March
Las Fallas de San José is undoubtedly one of the most famous and exuberant fiestas in Spain.
Celebrations kick off at the beginning of March with the first of 'La Mascletá' (daily until the 19th) At two o'clock every afternoon, thousands of people converge on the main square for an impressive display of Aerial Mortars, Bombshells and Bangers. Although it only lasts a few minutes, it builds to a climax that is quite literally an ear shattering wall of sound. Not recommended for very young children or the fainthearted!
What sets this fiesta apart from the others are the ‘Fallas’ themselves. These huge effigies are constructed from wood, plaster and papier-mâché and then erected on streets throughout the city.
Each district has it’s own ‘Casa Fallera’ which acts as a social club and meeting place for those who raise the money to pay for the individual Falla. (Some can cost in excess of 130,000 Euros!) Competition between rival Casas is fierce!
