Alicante offers an even broader range of budget carriers and is easily accessible by the A7 motorway (2 hours) or by high-speed rail link (1.5 hours). It's worth remembering that both Madrid and Barcelona can be reached in around 3 hours. The new airport at Castellon, which is only 70km North of Valencia will be operational within the next couple of years and so options are set to improve further.
For the more adventurous, you could consider taking your car. Catch the Eurostar shuttle (or ferry) from the UK and then drive through France or take the ferry directly to either Bilbao or Santander. The cost can be quite high, particularly in peak season, but is obviously off set by the savings to be made on hiring a car. If you intend to come for more than a month, this could be cost effective. European routes are available free from the AA web site (see link).
Note that if you do intend to drive, be sure to contact your insurer to clarify the validity of your cover and confirm which international driving permits you require. You will also need to adjust the headlight pattern on your car for left hand driving and display either a GB sticker or the newer Euro style registration plates. Carry with you spare bulbs, warning triangles and a reflective fluorescent jacket. These items are compulsory under Spanish law.
Plans are currently being considered to enlarge Valencia Airport and construct an additional runway. Together with the recent introduction of charter services, accessibility to the city is improving all the time. These factors will undoubtedly open up the region and increase demand for local property. It seems likely that as a result of this, prices will ultimately rise.
